Whooping Cranes

My friend has a huge lens and a high resolution camera and took these pictures at StMarks Jan 30 2012. She was a very long way from the cranes, but I love the idea that you can now see cranes in the wild at St Marks NWR. YEA OM!!!!!!!!!!

My Process

People often ask how I draw such wonderful dogs.

I usually start at the nose. Then I go to the eyes. Once I get the nose to eye distance right I can start on the outlines.

With the general ouline and some key areas started, I'll work on some other outstanding features. Here I did the tongue and more work on the eyes.

I keep filling in the rest of the image, always confirming with my subject every few strokes.

Finally it's the shading and the highlights. I keep adding detail until the dog is looking back at me from the screen. Then it's finally time to add the signature.

Whooping crane

OK I snuck this picture in because It's donated to raise money for Operation Migration. They fley whooping cranes from Wisconsin where they are grown, all the way to Florida. They cranes learn the route and fly back on there own in the late winter, early spring. I'll let you know what if anything this goes for.
